Update on deadlines for your 2019 plan year and health spending benefit expenses

When healthcare providers started to shut down in mid-March to adhere to COVID-19 social distancing restrictions, members asked if there could possibly be an extension of the benefit year. We know that some of you had been hoping to squeeze in some last-minute services, appointments or other expenses during the last two weeks of March.

We have been advised that Canada Life has not made a decision about extending the plan year for any of their clients. It is our expectation that they (and other insurance companies) will not be able to do it due to systems limitations. Since the IATSE 667/669 Group Benefit plan year runs from April 1 to March 31, this means that, as with any other year, you can submit claims for your expenses up to March 31. Make sure you remember to submit claims for any eligible virtual care appointments up to that date.

The news is similar in terms of any possible extensions for the health spending benefit deadlines. As of now, there is no change. Because all health spending benefits are governed by the Income Tax Act, and therefore the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), it is at their discretion whether or not deadlines will be extended.

We want you to know that our Consultant is continually monitoring these issues for any updates. If there are any changes, we’ll let you know by email ASAP.

We hope you continue to protect yourself and your loved ones, and stay well.

Sincerely,

Your 667/669 Health & Welfare Fund Trustees
